Incivilities in the workplace

Incivilities in the workplace, although subtle and difficult to detect, can have a significant impact on the well-being and health of employees. These low-intensity deviant behaviors, ambiguous as to their intent to harm, nonetheless violate social norms of respect.

Incivilities can take many forms, from a colleague walking past you without saying hello to a teammate raising her voice. While these behaviors may seem insignificant, they can build up and become a source of significant interpersonal stress in the workplace.

The consequences of incivilities on individuals and organizations are major. They can lead to psychological distress, emotional and professional burnout, and reduced creativity and social support. For organizations, the consequences can include increased staff turnover, productivity losses, reduced job satisfaction and commitment, and a poor reputation on the job market.

It’s important to note that these consequences can also affect those who witness incivilities, even from a distance. It is therefore essential for organizations to take steps to prevent and manage incivility in the workplace.

In conclusion, although incivilities may seem insignificant, they have a major impact on individual and collective health. It is therefore crucial to understand them and take steps to prevent them.
